Blizzard Devs React to Henry Cavill as Arthas Fan Concept
06/10/2020 a las 09:03
Last month, a faux Wrath of the Lich King movie poster
featuring Henry Cavill as Arthas Menethil
took the internet by storm, inspiring the dreams of fans everywhere. Reactions have since been overwhelmingly positive, even among Blizzard devs, with former Senior Vice President of Story and Franchise Development Chris Metzen, Senior Writer Christie Golden, and Associate Narrative Designer Anne Stickney also voicing their support of the role.
Henry Cavill is well known for being a gamer and
World of Warcraft
player, famously relating that he was
too busy playing WoW to take the call
offering him the role of Superman in
Man of Steel
, and then again charming the internet with his
PC building instagram video
. Most recently, the English actor has starred as Geralt of Rivia in the Netflix adaptation of
, with teaser photos from the upcoming second season again reinforcing the idea of Cavill in a Warcraft-universe role.
Following Chris Metzen's tweet reacting to Henry Cavill in that armor, Shara184 photoshopped the actor as Arthas!
Duncan Jones, director of the Warcraft movie, previously spoke on his concept for a
three-part series following Thrall to Kalimdor
, although the lukewarm success of the initial movie left any potential sequels unlikely. Still, that hasn't stopped fans from wishing for another shot at the series, pointing out that a movie centered on Arthas may be more likely to succeed, as it focuses primarily on humans, without trying to explain as many confusing plot points, such as Orcs, the Fel, or Medivh's betrayal. While there are still mystical elements, it's a much more straightforward story of a hero succumbing to corruption.
Actor Rob Kazinsky, who was a top-100 raider before playing Doomhammer in the
movie has also hinted at interest in a Lich King movie, responding to
asking if he'd play the Lich King and encouraging
fans to buy DVDs
in order to support the project, so that one day we might see a movie covering Arthas' storyline as well.
While it may just be a fantasy at this point, multiple attempts at movie adaptations of video games are not uncommon. Although it remains unsubstantiated, we've already heard rumors of a
Warcraft 2 in the works
, and the seldom spoke of
Activision Blizzard Studios
is still rumored to be making a
Diablo and Overwatch
series, so it wouldn't be a huge stretch to think they might one day tell Warcraft stories as well. Voicing support of these projects might help make it a reality, but for now we'll have to depend on fan art and our imaginations.
