How Much More Tank Threat Does Each Essence Slot Give?
24/07/2019 a las 12:07
Today's hotfix adjusted the amount of bonus threat that Tanks will get when they deal damage, but the
weren't clear as to how much. We've investigated Tank Threat once again and tank threat has been increased, but probably not as much as you would have hoped.
Omen3 Threat Meter
For some reason, the addon
doesn't provide a 1 damage to 1 threat ratio. As such, we will convert all these screenshots back to a 1-to-1 damage to Threat ratio using a rough ratio (0.6288 threat to 1 point of damage)

Previous Base Tank Threat
Before today's hotfix, we ran a few tests to see what the bonus threat multiplier was for tanks.
The amount of threat generated by tanks is about
the amount of damage that they deal.
Screenshot taken from earlier today.
This works out to be about a 2.73 ratio seen in Omen3, then adjusted based on Omen's ratios is ~4.34.
1 Essence Tank Threat
In 8.2, level 120 players now get their Heart of Azeroth leveled to 35 and automatically unlock the Major slot in the center of the Heart of Azeroth. This means that all 120 players now benefit from the increased Tank Threat generation.
The amount of threat generated by tanks with exactly 1 Essence slot unlocked (Major) is about
the amount of damage that they deal. This is about a 9% increase over base threat.

This works out to be about 2.99 ratio seen in Omen3, then adjusted based on Omen's ratios is 4.76.
2 Essence Tank Threat
When you unlock your first Minor slot at Heart of Azeroth level 55, Tanks will now get an additional threat modifier.
The amount of threat generated by tanks with exactly 2 Essence slots unlocked (Major + 1 Minor) is about
the amount of damage that they deal. This is about an 18% increase over base threat.

Extrapolation: 3 Essence
When players eventually unlock the final minor slot at level 65, it is assumed that this will follow the same pattern and tanks with 3 Essences will generate threat equal to
the amount of damage that they deal or another 9% increase over 2 Essences (27% over base).
Chart and Conclusion
If you don't like working with ratios, numbers and math, don't worry. All you need to know is that each Essence slot you unlock is a 9% increase in your Threat generation as a tank.
% Increase From Hotfix
No Heart of Azeroth
Major Essence Unlocked
Minor Essence 1 Unlocked
Minor Essence 2 Unlocked
The amount of Threat given at each Essence slot is less than expected considering the considerable Threat challenge that Tanks and DPS are running into in Season 3. As a basic example, the Tank AoE damage Essence,
Ánima de la Vida y la Muerte
has a 2 minute cooldown at Max Rank whereas the DPS AoE damage Essence,
Esencia del iris de enfoque
has a 1.5 minute cooldown which means that a Tank cannot match the DPS' use of their Essence to help maintain threat against the AoE burst. With DPS increasing, but Tank DPS staying low, it wasn't uncommon to see Tanks lose
on a Skittish week to a boomkin without the use of using Taunt
in their single-target rotation
or non-Warrior Tanks to an Unholy DK..
Panthea, one of the co-writers of our
Blood Death Knight Class Guide
has written down his thoughts on the change.
My thoughts on the tank change are that they do not adequately solve the issue they have set out to resolve. By increasing a threat modifier you will only delay the issue rather than resolve the root cause.
What was the issue?
The issue here in my opinion is that the scaling on DPS players with this new increased ilvl ceiling coupled with essences has far outweighed what tanks have received leading to a wide gap between the two.
Buffing the threat modifier **in the base case scenario** will resolve the issue for now, however once people are nearing ilvl ceilings, it will return once more, and at that point the cycle begins again.
The answer here in my opinion is to keep the two closely aligned in terms of DPS output so that the threat modifiers can work as intended instead.
The current implementation of the threat buff (from in game threat points before/after) is that the threat modifier has been increased by 0.25x per essence unlock, however when a player does their burst/AoE they are peeling by a factor which is larger than this. If this is the intended solution, it would need to be increased further to keep up with DPS players.
Lastly, by tying the proposed solution to essence unlock levels this discourages people from playing tanks or playing tank alts as they will be significantly behind in terms of threat generation, at the very least the major essence should award a significantly higher threat bonus than the minor slots to allow for alts/new players to keep up.
Even with this change, it's likely that many tanks will still have problems on mass AoE packs and the options for these aren't great.
Rogues are a good supplement for Tank Threat and can help with
Secretos del oficio
and will probably still be used in Mythic+ considering their utility.
Tell your DPS to Throttle and wait for the Tank to get sufficient AoE threat before blowing burst AoE cooldowns.
Many Tank classes have problems with "snap" AoE threat, especially on mobs that come in late into a fight. In Season 2, if new adds were hit by an
, those mobs would be stuck onto them like glue (which has now been nerfed by quite a bit). But what does a Blood DK do?
Tormenta de huesos
is great once every minute, but once that's down, they have 1, maybe 2 charges of
Hervor de sangre
which is not very much damage. Another example is Protection Paladin.
Escudo de vengador
only hits 4 targets, so it doesn't work well in a massive AoE pack -- leaving only a couple abilities that hit more than those targets:
which deals its damage over time,
Escudo del honrado
which hits decently hard but is their mitigation ability and
Martillo del honrado
which doesn't deal very much AoE damage.
Personally, I don't see Threat as a fun mechanic for Tanks (who have to fight for Threat), DPS (who have to throttle their damage or risk pulling threat and dying) or healers (who have to fix when threat mishaps occur) but let us know what you think. Do you enjoy the threat mechanic and want it to be something tanks have to fight for and DPS have to throttle in some situations? Do you hate it and want it to return to Legion's 10x multiplier so threat isn't even an issue? Let us know your role, what you think about threats and why in the comments below.
