Layer Hopping - General Tips for Burning Crusade Classic
07/06/2021 a las 00:43
With Burning Crusade Classic's launch, many players are going through the Dark Portal for the first time or coming back to the game after a long hiatus. We're highlighting some general tips and terms for new players--this spotlight is on Layer Hopping.
Layers are a new technology Blizzard created for Classic, similar to the Sharding system on Retail World of Warcraft. Basically, each realm on Classic has multiple versions of the entire world (called "layers"), all stacked on top of one another. Each layer has a population cap and once that population reaches the maximum, new players logging in will be sent to a different layer.
Because players group up for various content in Classic, it wouldn't make sense if players on different layers couldn't group up together. Thus, you have what is known as "Layer Hopping" where players will intentionally join a group to access a different layer. One of the most popular tools for tracking what layer you are on is an addon known as
Nova World Buffs
. With this addon, there is a setting in the configuration menu "Show Minimap Layer", which will display a Layer number on your Minimap.
At first, it will show
on the Minimap, but after you target a neutral NPC, it will update with your current layer. With this enabled, players can track what layer they are on and ask for a "Layer Hop" and specify they want to go to any layer other than the one they are on. For example, "Looking for Layer hop, not Layer 1" would be a common way to ask.
Layer hopping is extremely useful for finding resources in the open world, getting away from enemy players harassing you, looking for a particular mob for a quest, or even just to see some fresh faces in other players on your layer.
