Race to Ring the Gong - Recapping the NA Release of Classic Ahn'Qiraj
04/08/2020 a las 16:47
In a recent Blue Post
, Blizzard highlighted which realms across North America were the first to complete the war effort. But before players can begin to zone into the Temple of Ahn'Qiraj, they have to ring the gong with
El cetro del Mar de Dunas
first, which has a long and arduous quest chain of its own, even requiring to farm 42,000 Carapace from elite bugs in Silithus!
Why Opening the Gates Might Be Harder Than the Raid
Opening the gates of Ahn'Qiraj is no easy task. To start off, the entire realm has to work together to collect
all the necessary war effort materials
, which is tens of thousands of cloth, leather, herbs, bars, among other things. Just collecting the raw materials needed is daunting enough, but then someone has to craft
El cetro del Mar de Dunas
to hit the gong with! That is one of the most difficult quest chains in all of Classic, because it requires a raid of players to take on bosses, and in some cases, an agreement with the opposite faction not to grief them!
Because of how difficult the war effort and
completing the Sceptor of the Shifting Sands
is, the "race" to kill C'thun is a little different than it was in Blackwing Lair. This time around, entire servers have to work together to get the gates open, before any guild can try to down the last boss of the new raid.
Skeram and ONSLAUGHT
Skeram was one of the realms mentioned in Blizzard's Blue Post, and it's worth mentioning because of the unique situation the realm has been faced with. As a 99% Horde populated server, most players outside of Skeram predicted this would be one of the last realms to complete the war effort. Surprisingly, ONSLAUGHT, which is a world class guild competing for fastest clear times in BWL, completed the entire war effort on Horde and transferred the necessary Alliance materials through the neutral Auction House, to finish the entire thing.
On top of that, the ONSLAUGHT guild was the first to ring the gong on Skeram, launching the 10-hour war and preparing the gates to open officially, later today at
10:25 PM Eastern Time
. If you're interested in watching ONSLAUGHT's first run in Temple of Ahn'Qiraj, you can follow one of their players at
. (Fair warning, there is mature language used in this stream) ONSLAUGHT will be competing for first C'thun kill in North America, and they are definitely setting themselves up for success by having the gates open early on their realm!
Incendius 6 Minutes Behind
A mere 6 minutes behind Skeram and ONSLAUGHT, Fusion rang the gong for Incendius and are looking to compete for the first C'thun kill in North America. To do that, Fusion will need a lightning fast AQ40 run for opening night, to make up for the lost time it took to ring the gong behind Skeram. Fusion is a top 100 Alliance guild and can definitely make a run, but it's going to be extremely difficult. Incendius gates open at
10:31 PM Eastern Time
. If you'd like to watch Fusion, follow
tonight! (Again, mature language)
In a recent news story
, Wowhead highlighted how Incendius was able to complete the war effort so quickly, by coming together as a server and working with one another to get all the necessary materials prepared ahead of time. While Fusion is one of the most competitive guilds on the server, there aren't many other large guilds on the server, so it was definitely a realm wide effort!
As previously reported on Wowhead
, many players were falsely reporting one another to prevent other guilds from completing the scepter quest chain. One of the realms impacted by this the most was Sulfuras, where the Alliance guild GRIZZLY was directly involved. In the end, it was a Horde guild that rang the gong, Amnesty, at 12:49 PM Eastern Time, which means the gates will open at
10:49 PM Eastern Time
. While GRIZZLY might not be able to compete for First C'thun, they will likely be competing in the speedrun race further into Phase 5, as they are a very competitive speedrunning guild.
Earthfury Lag Stopping the Gong
Players on Earthfury claimed there was too much lag at the gong and they weren't able to actually ring it. There is also the situation of guilds griefing one another on the quest chain, causing it to take a bit longer for the Scepter to be completed. Either way, the gong was eventually rang at 1:55 PM Eastern Time, which means the gates will open and the Temple of Ahn'qiraj raid will be available at
11:55 PM Eastern Time
. There isn't much chance a guild from Earthfury will be able to compete for First C'thun in North America, unless something catastrophic happens.
Guilds in China Already Clearing Temple of Ahn'Qiraj
Lastly, because of the Ahn'Qiraj event being tied to a realm's raid reset timer, China's realms had a massive 12 hour lead on the North American realms, which means multiple Chinese guilds have already cleared Temple of Ahn'Qiraj. While this might not seem very important, many of the top guilds have been playing close attention to player streams, looking for any new information.
The most important, was how quickly C'thun's
actually goes off when the boss is pulled. It turns out, back in Vanilla World of Warcraft, Blizzard nerfed Eye Beam so that it would take a bit longer for the first one to go out and take more time in between casts, effectively nerfing the encounter drastically. Based on the Chinese realms and the encounter VODS, it looks to be a much easier fight than private server players (which make up most of the top performing guilds) were hoping for.
