Today's Shadowlands collaboration with Nobbel87 focuses on the zone of Maldraxxus, the primary home of the Necrolord Covenant. Maldraxxus is a realm of death and decay, in which souls and their anima are used to power the military might of the Shadowlands. Souls which are drawn to this realm of the afterlife are tested for unwavering loyalty and obedience, cosigned to a single minded purpose.
Last week we
recapped the intro Maw story
and
Bastion
--next up will be Ardenweald.
Walkthrough of Maldraxxus Story
Afterlives: Maldraxxus
We were introduced to the zone of Maldraxxus before Shadowlands launched in the animated short
Afterlives: Maldraxxus
. Here we meet Draka for the first time, an underutilized character in Warcraft's past who thrives in her new role as a warrior and spy. This cinematic sets up the conflict between the Houses and gives us the interesting lore nugget that
Draka was spying on the Burning Legion
, years before the events in
Harbingers: Illidan
.
Notable Loot in Maldraxxus
Maldraxxus is the second zone players will complete in the Story Campaign after the Maw introduction and Bastion, but there are other reasons to visit the zone even after questing is over. There are many rare spawns with exciting mount, pet, and toy drops!

Necrolord Covenant
After first-time players complete all four stories--Bastion, Maldraxxus, Ardenweald, and Revendreth, they will be prompted to pick a covenant. Here you will unlock gameplay-changing features such as Covenant abilities and Soulbinds, as well as covenant-specific content like minigames, more story campaigns, transportation networks, anima conductor perks, and the ever-popular armor sets!
The liches, warlords, and spies of the Necrolords act as the military arm of the Shadowlands, protecting the Shadowlands against external forces that wage war against the enemies of Death.
Below you will find guides to content specific to the Necrolord Covenant. If you are on this page, you are likely interested in the story of Shadowlands and would be particularly keen on the
Necrolord Campaign Guide
as it details what happens to the main characters of Maldraxxus after the zone finale.

Maldraxxus Dungeons
There are two dungeons in Maldraxxus, both which further the narrative of the zone's story campaign.
In
Plaguefall
, we investigate the downfall of the House of Plagues.
Underneath the ruined House of Plagues, lies one of the most destructive forces Maldraxxus has ever known. Those who covet this power search the plague-ridden debris in a race to claim this weapon for themselves. Whoever captures this prize will hold the fate of the Shadowlands in their clutches.
The other dungeon,
Theater of Pain
, is a brawling dungeon where you face off against different contenders to prove your might.
In Maldraxxus you must constantly be tested and measured as the best to defend the Shadowlands. The best place to prove yourself is the Theater of Pain. Throngs of contenders face off for the hope of facing one of the champions. Brutality! Mayhem! Violence! And of course, Pain! Only the strongest become champions of their house, and only one can be the strongest.
Three Familiar Faces
Maldraxxus reunites us with three familiar faces, although they make an unlikely trio--Draka, Vashj, and Mograine. Pulled from different parts of Azeroth's history, they represent the might of Maldraxxus in different ways.
We've compiled their
amusing interactions
in a post where they discuss everything from children to Vashj's naga form.
If you'd like to learn more about each character, check Nobbel's write up below:
Draka is not the one we partied with during Warlords of Draenor. This is the main universe Draka, Thrall’s mother who in life was not a warrior born, but a warrior made. Going through trials and tribulations to earn her strength. And when the corruption of the First Horde became clear, she and Durotan had the strength to stand up for what was right. Tried to expose it for all to see. Sadly assassins took them out before they could, leaving them and their baby to die in the wilds. But that would not be Thrall's future. Meanwhile, his mother passed on into the Shadowlands, got sorted into Maldraxxus and joined the House of Eyes.
Where as Draka might have found a new home as baroness amongst the chosen, Lady Vashj is not willing to move on before claiming vengeance for her Margrave Akarek. This is our lady Vashj, the same Naga, former Highborne that allied with Illidan Stormrage and Kael’thas Sunstrider. She was slain during the Burning Crusade, but luckily she’s not holding any grudges.
Our missing baron is none other than Alexandros Mograine, the Ashbringer. A legendary hero in the time that the plague hit the lands of Lordaeron and Arthas walked his road of damnation to ultimately merge with the Lich King. I’ve done a full video on the story of the Ashbringer, but real short--
His blade turned the undead in Lordaeron to ash until his eldest son Renault betrayed him and stabbed him in the back. Alexandros was claimed by Kel'Thuzad and turned into a Horseman. His son ventured into Naxxramas and put his father out of his misery, brought the now-corrupted blade to the Scarlet Monastery where the spirit of Alexandros took out Renault. Then Darion sacrificed himself at Light’s Hope Chapel, saving the day but handing himself over to Kel’Thuzad and the Lich King. Turned into a Death Knight, he now served that which he fought against until the Ashbringer was purified by Tirion and the Knights of the Ebon Blade found the strength to step away from Arthas. Fast-forward to Legion where Darion worked with Bolvar, again attacked Light’s Hope Chapel only for the Light to smite him down. Now he leads the Four Horseman like his father once did, while Alexandros’ spirit moved on, ended up in Maldraxxus and joined the House of the Chosen.
Primus and the Maldraxxus Houses
The Primus is missing in Maldraxxus and his whispers have led to speculation that he is actually the Runecarver serving the Jailer against his will. Below you can check out a speculation article and video on this topic.
Message from the Primus
Maldraxxus is supposed to be ruled over by the Primus, an eternal one like the Archon and the Arbiter. He's a legendary weaponsmith, and with the aid of an ally able to show infinite timeways, he's also become a master strategist and tactician, nearly unbeatable on the field of battle.
He was the one that devised a system of great houses, barons and eternal war games that allowed their forces to continually improve. Despite that, the Primus had to leave his seat in power to look for answers and has been missing for quite a while which left the five different houses with their Margraves in charge.
The house of Constructs with its ruler Margrave Gharmal.
The House of Rituals with Margrave Sin’dane.
The House of Plagues with Margrave Stradama.
The House of Eyes with Margrave Akarek.
The House of the Chosen with Margrave Krexus and then each house has two chosen Barons.
Some of the Primus' whispers:
I am the Primus. Your presence within my sanctum means a darkness has fallen upon Maldraxxus...and all the realms of death.
Ages ago, the eternal ones punished our brother Zovaal for his treachery. He was bound within the inescapable maw, to be forevermore its Jailer.
Now I fear that zovaal did not act alone. I suspect he had ancient allies...and will seek to win others to his cause. That you are hearing this message means my suspiciouns proved true.
Zovaal has forged his chains into a weapon...and brought about my defeat. There is but one hope to save the Shadowlands.
The Eternal Ones must stand together once more, before the jailer escapes the maw. Bring my warning to the Archon, the Winter Queen and the Sire. They must see to our defenses.
Do not let Zovaal reach the sepulcher. The arbiter is the final key. Protect her, or all is lost.
From this we've learned that Zovaal the Jailer was not always the jailer of the Maw. Once he was their brother, probably an Eternal One until some kind of treachery happened and they locked him away. His chains have been forged into a weapon, and from the Maw he has been manipulating events for ages--potentially the whole story of the Lich King itself and all its ramifications. Then there are ancient unknown allies somewhere in the shadows.... it’s a good start. It sheds a little bit of light on what’s going on here, but it also creates so many more questions.
What's Next - Necrolord Covenant Campaign
There are several mysteries surrounding Maldraxxus which are examined further in the Necrolord campaign, including the nature of the attacks on Bastion which draws in the Kyrian and Venthyr covenants too, as well as the missing Primus.
