Uther Describes How His Soul Was Shattered By Frostmourne, Hinting at Sylvanas' Character Development
14/08/2021 a las 01:40
The latest and final chapter of Chains of Domination, patch 9.1's storyline, has revealed some interesting information about souls that have been shattered by Frostmourne - such as those belonging to Uther and Sylvanas - and how they're affected.
Warning, spoilers from this week's questline ahead.
Chapter 9 - What Happens Next
, players have an opportunity to hang back in Korthia and speak to various important characters. Uther can be found standing with Jaina, and they share a
touching reunion where they talk about their mutual love for Arthas
Speaking to Uther also allows the player to learn more about his wound from Frostmourne. He explains that a shattered soul does not mean it's divided into a part that's noble and another that's cruel. Instead, it's as if a part of him was frozen in time - a part that has caused him to reflect on the choices he's made ever since players helped return it to him during
last week's campaign chapter
<Uther reaches toward the wound beneath his chestplate.>
When Arthas struck me down, Frostmourne shattered my soul. But it was not divided into one part that was noble and another that was cruel.
Rather, it was as if a portion of my consciousness remained frozen in time while the rest of my soul carried on.
To feel that missing fragment restored... well, it has caused me to reflect upon many of the choices I have made.
This is important, because many have wondered if Sylvanas's agency in her previous choices will be removed with the reveal that she was missing part of her soul when she made many of those choices. The idea that Sylvanas was being bad but is all good now just because she got that portion of her soul back would be an unsatisfying conclusion to her story - It would make her avoid accountability for her worst actions, such as Teldrassil, while invalidating her accomplishments, such as creating and leading the Forsaken.
If Uther is to be believed, the Sylvanas that will return to us once she's woken up is not going to be exactly the Elf that she was in life. She will still be herself, but a part of her consciousness that has been frozen will be restored, causing her to look back on the choices she's made with a different perspective to the one she viewed them through before.
Sylvanas's story has been a controversial one, to say the least, but it is good to see a clarification like this.
