I would like to add about
Mah Keyz!
Oh silly me, I didnt read the "Client" part >_<
I was recently hacked and I never ever thought it was the Wowhead Client. I put the blame on myself for perhaps stumbling across one of those "icky" sites while I was hunting around for Worgen information. That's what I get for wandering the web and not sticking with Wowhead! FYI Getting hacked is NOT fun so please guys be careful!
It's all about common sense also.... Wowhead is a very established company and has been around since what? 2004?. Do you think they would do something that dumb to inject some malware/trojan/etc into your computer to steal from you? They would have be the most stupidest and dumbest people alive to try such a thing especially when WOW is pretty much a high rated game with over 11 million subscribers. I'm sure most of the developers here on WOWhead have close relations with the folks over at Blizzard. I'm sure this website is monitored closely by Blizzard as well because any signs of the users being jepordized by a program(ex wowhead client) the people here would get their butts handed to them on a silver platter and would probably even take necessary legal actions. So with all that being said enough is enough. This is a FREE website providing you with dataz and a lot of work has been done here obviously since it wasn't just done with just basic HTML/CSS coding. People are active here and as the population increases here on WOWhead the more harder it will be to hide such a thing. Good work WOWhead for clarifying the obvious and putting it in black in white for those still in question!
I'd also like to throw in:
Anyone blaming the Wowhead Client for their account getting hacked:
Solid.
Its not unheard of- Example, the Curse Client had been used as an attack vector before through a number of vulnerabilities. I'm glad WoWhead is being up front and educating their users at the same time.
Security is SRS BUSNSS!No seriously, an authenticator works wonders with security.
Most people whom have complained to me about their accounts getting hacked have done one of the two following things:A) they were not using any antimalware programs, at all. B) they made a habbit of visiting random links leading to unknown websites by people from various forums. Both generally no-no's. do i think that it's possible for people to be hacked via an addon? yes, curse proved this.. but, this is no reason to blame wowhead. if you'll recall, people blamed blizzard for the wave of account hackings that came about when people switched to battlenet accounts last year.
I find wowhead client pretty safe, since it only activates when you enter in game via add-on....but I'm not all that technical about malware and all haha. Just don't wonder on unknown and unrecommended sites is my best suggestion!
Why doesn't wowhead just release the source code to the wowhead client for all to see. Doesn't need to even be under a reusable license, just a public source license. That way we can assure ourselves you are good to your word.
